You might have heard this -- why isn’t there unity in the Church? Well, if by unity you envision some idyllic, picturesque kind of pastoral unity, this will never happen. Rather, what we COULD have in the Church are tribes, clans, or whatever you want to call them -- “pockets” of people who form different clusters of unity and together they form the Church.
For this to happen, you need to happen YOUR tribe first. If you are frustrated due to not being able to fit in, there’s no need to blame everyone else for it. Your situation is your situation -- just because you don’t fit in it doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t fit in.
But it’s a good thing to determine you will find your tribe. Somehow, somewhere, someday, you come to a place of connecting with like-minded people with whom you share enough to make you feel like together you can achieve something for God. When this happens, don’t place ALL your expectations on your tribe, that’s unrealistic, too. You need to build those special few relationships on which you can lean and feel like they can lean on you. It may take a long time.
How can you tell your tribe:
- It inspires you.
- It adds something to your life you might not be able to get otherwise.
- It surrounds you (in a good way).
- It makes room for you to add to it.
- It makes you want to sacrifice because the reward is greater than the sacrifice.
If you thought you had found your tribe and it wasn’t it, exit gracefully. It takes mature, internally strong people to do so. Move on and keep seeking. Your tribe is waiting somewhere out there, wondering what’s taking you so long.
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. Gen. 13:8 (NKJV)
